Research in psychophysiology and cardiovascular health has found that chronic emotional suppression — particularly unexpressed anger, resentment, and frustration — can contribute to increased sympathetic nervous system activation, which keeps the body in a prolonged “fight-or-flight” state.
When emotions are consistently inhibited instead of processed, the brain continues releasing stress hormones such as cortisol and adrenaline, causing blood vessels to constrict, heart rate to rise, and blood pressure to remain elevated for longer periods.
Studies have shown that people who habitually suppress emotions often experience greater cardiovascular reactivity during stress, including sharper spikes in systolic blood pressure and lower heart rate variability, both linked to a higher risk of hypertension, arterial inflammation, and long-term cardiovascular disease.
Researchers also note that the physiological “effort” required to constantly mask true feelings can become a chronic internal stressor, placing continuous strain on the heart and circulatory system over time.
I have noticed in my practice that a lot of my patients are not aware that they are living in this “fight-or-flight” state. This is were I find Acupuncture, especially Japanese or 5-Elemental Acupuncture, can help immensely. By working with the Autonomic System and balancing the cortisol and adrenaline hormones down. My patient’s body & mind will begin to slow down and relax. Of course, my patient also needs to help themselves by taking some time out of their crazy schedules. I find simple breathing exercises definitely helps as well as meditating (difficult I know), Qigong, walking or just simply sitting with a brew.
Life is for living NOT simply existing.
