How Can Acupuncture Benefit IVF Patients or indeed any couple trying to get pregnant?
Acupuncturists have used acupuncture alongside conventional therapies like chemotherapy, standard pain management and surgical interventions. It makes logical sense that we might add this drug-free therapy alongside IVF. There is a long historical record describing infertility treatment with acupuncture and East Asian medicine (EAM) within the classical texts. Within the past three decades, we have translated acupuncture and EAM for infertility to integrate with IVF therapies. The intention all along is to improve patient health and birth outcomes.
When I began this journey I was working with couples in their 40’s now I work with couples in their 20’s! I find the increase in numbers alarming and it does make me wonder why couples are finding it so difficult to conceive. Personally I believe it is a mixture of what we are putting into our atmosphere, such as Digital Technology – Greenhouse Gases; E-Waste Toxins; Aerosols, etc. and how we are living our lives. When you look around at your friends, your family, yourself… what do you see? In fact, when did you last stop and look around you? Most of us are in a permanent state or chaos. Of course life is very expensive and we have big bills to pay. Which in turn leads to sleepless nights and lots of overthinking. Over time this all accumulates until we are permanently in a “fight-or-flight” situation. This causes major changes in our hormonal structure (this includes men too).
In 24yrs the one thing I have learned from working with couples trying to conceive is that you require to be happy, relaxed and contented. Yes supplements can help. Yes eating a good diet can help. But having fun, enjoying each others company. Weekends away, a glass of wine with your evening meal, sitting down and just spending time talking (not on the mobile or laptop). This is the key to your dream.
